If you were, or still are, an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus user, then you may be entitled to a pay out from Apple, after the company agreed to a settlement for users who had experienced audio issues with their device.

With $35 million set aside for affected owners, and individuals entitled to up to $349 each, depending on their experience, this isn’t a settlement you want to miss if you’re eligible.

We explain what you need to know about the settlement and how to claim.

The settlement isn’t the first that Apple has been involved in recently – in fact, the company is no stranger to paying out to disgruntled customers, from everything from its Family Sharing plan to its gift cards and beyond.

This particular case is specific to the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, and relates to an alleged audio fault with the phone, with claims that the model experiences issues, related to its ‘audio IC’ chip.

The case against Apple, Tubak et al v. Apple Inc, was filed in May 2019, and has resulted in Apple agreeing to pay a sum of $35 million to those affected. However, Apple denies the claims that were made in the lawsuit, hence the settlement.

If you want to be involved in the settlement, and entitled to the pay out, you’ll need to make sure you meet the following criteria:

  • US resident who owned an Apple iPhone 7 or 7 Plus between September 16, 2016 and January 3, 2023
  • Reported issues to Apple, relating to Sound-Speaker, Sound-Microphone, Sound – Receiver, Unexpected Restart / Shutdown, or Power On – Device Unresponsive
  • Including but not limited to “those who paid Apple out of pocket for repairs or replacements for Covered Issues as reflected in Apple’s records”

If you paid out of pocket for repairs, you can expect to receive between $50 to $349 from the settlement, provided that you’re eligible.

Those who complained about the issue to Apple, but did not pay Apple for repairs, are entitled up to $125.

If you want to make a claim in this settlement, all you need to do is fill in the online form.

You can also download a paper form to fill out and post it to this address:

Tabak v. Apple Class Action Administrator
1650 Arch Street Suite 2210
Philadelphia, PA 19103

The deadline for submitting claims is June 3rd, 2024, with the final approval scheduled for June 18th.
